How to Style a Photo Ledge

After over two years of living in our brand new home, I finally figured out what to do with our massive, angled living room wall… a photo ledge filled with staggered artwork, plants, and meaningful words! Since this took some time and research, I thought I’d share some tips I learned along the way.

We have a vaulted, 12-ft ceiling in our living room that was honestly quite intimidating to me for the first two years of living here. After months of scouring Pinterest (not to mention finally having some free time to implement what I had in my head), I was able to make some of my living room decor dreams come true! I hope the tips below are helpful, if you are looking to add a photo ledge to your home or tweak your existing shelving and decor.

  1. Measure, give yourself a trial run, and don’t be afraid to GO BIG with your shelf/ledge! If you have a large wall like I do, it was helpful for me to cut a cardboard strip and tape it to the wall for a few days to see how I felt about the size first. We ended up ordering this 96-inch photo ledge from Etsy and absolutely love it.

  2. Experiment with multiple textures and materials to style your ledge, once you have it hung. I knew I didn’t want only pictures, so I had fun adding a few small plants (both real and fake) along with some artwork too. I love the added dimension that this brought.

  3. Layer your frames and decor in different sizes, as well as colors. I got my frames at Target and Hobby Lobby. Don’t be afraid to utilize black, white, and neutral frames all together. They don’t have to be the same. I picked out several styles and sizes (more than I needed… on purpose) so I could try them all out at home and see what would look best.

  4. Alternate your frames/art every other so there aren’t the same heights right next to each other. I kept tweaking mine over the course of a week before I finally decided on which ones and which order I liked best. Then I simply returned any unused frames and decor to the store.

  5. Print pictures (I went with only black and white) that are meaningful to you! I ended up ordering prints of a couple wedding photos, as well as one from our biblical study trip to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel two years ago (ironically which took place a week after we moved into this house).

This was a fun project for me to take on as we begin a new year. It’s always nice to have fresh spaces in your home that bring you joy! Do you have a styled photo ledge in your house? I’d love to see it! Tag me in your pics on social and use the hashtag #inspiredbybrooke so we can all share some inspiration with one another. Happy Sunday!
